Volume 3, "Christian Values," includes voices of Christian laypeople and ministers who share their views on the Bible and the church, as well as telling their own stories.

Volume 4 features Heather Reichgott, a Presbyterian, out lesbian, and graduate of San Francisco Theological Seminary, who talks about her coming out process, the growth of her Christian faith, and her call to ministry and leadership in a Christian denomination not ready to fully accept her.

More Light Lectionary Reflections for June 10, 2010

Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 – 8:22
The LORD created me at the beginning of (God’s) work, the first of (God’s) acts of long ago ... 8:27 When (God) established the heavens, I was there, when (God) drew a circle on the face of the deep ..." (New Revised Standard Version – NRSV)
These verses evoke the verse “Outwitted” by the late American poet Edwin Markham:

He drew a circle that shut me out —
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!

God's circle is always larger than those we may draw. And we are established, and we are called to establish others, in the middle of that circle. In the words of the Carter Family's timeless spiritual, "Let the circle be unbroken."

Psalm 8 – When was the last time you ever heard yourself referred to by the church as "made ... a little lower than God"? (v.5a)  Not often, perhaps. What does it mean to you that you have been created in the image of God?

Romans 5:1-5 – What is your own personal testimony/witness from suffering to endurance to character to hope, as Paul outlines it here?

Verse five reads in the NRSV, "and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." Per the 2007 More Light Sunday theme, how does God's love liberate us from hopelessness through the Holy Spirit?

John 16:12-15 – Reflect on the words "God has yet more light to shed on God's people" and Jesus' words today in the NRSV, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, (God) will guide you into all the truth."

How might these statements overlap? Can a promise yet to be realized be truly liberating? Per the Romans passage today, is this the hope that "does not disappoint us"?
Passages to supplement the lectionary
John 17:20-21, Jesus prays that All may be One
1 Samuel 18:1-5, 20:1-42, The story of David and Jonathan

John 4:1-42, The call and ministry of the Samaritan woman
Romans 16:1-16, Paul greets fellow ministers in various family configurations
 Declaration of Debrecen
