Will this amenmdent split the church?
No. Passage of this amendment allows us to affirm the good news of God's fully welcoming community. For people of all faith who believe we are One Body in Christ, no issues can split the church. Currently, judidical action emanating from G-6.0106b are causing divisions and disrupting the peace, unity, and purity of the church.
Will we have to ordain homosexuals?
No. Sessions and presbyteries will choose themost qualified persons for ordained office. This amendment neither reequires nor prohibits the ordination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender people.
Does this amendment lower our standards for odrination?
No. In fact, it upholds the standards we have always had. Our Book of Order states that "...church officers should be persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship, and love of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord." (G-6.0106a)
Does this amendment move us away from our tradiitonal value of being a connectional church?
No. The proposal of the 213th General Assembly (2001) returns us to our traditional theology and practice that no class of people should be categorically denied access to ordained office in our church, and local governing bodies have the responsibilty to discern suitably under the review of higher governing bodies.
Does this amendment settle the question of hommosexuality and the church?
This proposal returns the responsibility to local sessions and presbytieries to decide thier own leadership. Passage of this amendment allows us to continue the conversation on human sexuality and to do so with mutual forbearance and tolerance.
Does passage of this amdnment mean we are accommodating ourselves to culture at the expense of Scripture?
No. Passage of theis amendment is not cultural accommodation. Passage will affirm our traditional historical understanding of biblical interpretation as set forth by our Reformed Faith. "Alll things in scripture are not alike plain in themselvesd, nor alike clear unto all." (Westminster Confession of Faith) Therefore, Scripture must be read carefully and faithful Presbyterians may differ.
