We now wish to make clear our commitment to extend our welcome to all people regardless of sexual orientation or preference. We see the visible and unmistakable evidence of God's grace in gay and lesbian people, as in all whom God has gathered by the movement of the Spirit. We believe that gays and lesbians have always been encompassed in Christ's ministry, which needs neither our permission nor approval. We are pleased that the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) has urged local congregations to reject homophobia and heterosexism and work for passage of laws which prohibit discrimination against persons because of their sexual orientation. We applaud this move toward full participation, and urge increasing openness, understanding and growth in this direction.
Therefore, we declare this church to be a "More Light" congregation and welcome all people as full participants in the life of the church without having to hide, deny or apologize for their sexual orientations. We extend to all persons whoc hoose to unite as members of Redwoods Presbyterian Church the full privileges and responsibilities of membership, including the right to hold office as an ordained elder or deacon, if elected by the congregation.
We encourage the General Assembly to reverse the policy that prohibts the ordination of homosexuals and urge our presbytery to work toward changing this policy. When our pastoral nominating committee undertakes a search for a pastor, we direct the committee to disregard the sexual orientation of the candidates.
This declaration was not made without discussion and some concern, but the majority felt that it was the only course to take as a community of faith in which the liberating power of the Holy Spirit rules and guides.
