I leave today for Copenhagen, Denmark. I will be doing a workshop at the Second International LGBT Human Rights Conference in Copenhagen as part of the World Out Games 2009. There are 800 activists from 85 countries participating in the conference. I am excited and grateful to be able to share a copy of "All God's Children" our new booklet along with the "Take a New Look" with the full complement of our MLP flyers with those who attend my workshop.
Karen Kavey and the mission outreach team of The Presbyterian Church, Mount Kisko, New York, a welcoming and affirming More Light Church, have shipped "Blue Books" for me to Copenhagen to share with all those who attend the workshop. Imagine the international outreach possible in a conference with representatives from 85 countries.
MLP and our pro-LGBT faith materials are going global. |

Episcopal Church Moves to End Ban on Gay Bishops
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The bishops of the Episcopal Church voted at the church’s convention on Monday to open “any ordained ministry” to gay men and lesbians, a move that could effectively undermine a moratorium on ordaining gay bishops that the church passed at its last convention three years ago. |

More Light Presbyterians is absolutely delighted to be able to attend and support the 2009 Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women, July 11 - 15, Louisville, Kentucky.
"Let your inner feminine shine, Michael" was the encouragement and blessing that Ralph Carter, MLP Board and Elder, Third Presbyterian Church, Rochester, NY, a welcoming & affirming More Light Church, shared with me as I am preparing to go to my fourth Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women.
I love Presbyterian Women. :) They get it. They see and experience their families and churches through the lens of their hearts that overflow with love and care for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning persons in their lives... children, grandchildren, friends in their families, at church or work.

Please join the National Board of Directors and Staff of More Light Presbyterians, as we celebrate the faithful ministries and witness of Lowe Avenue Presbyterian Church, Omaha, Nebraska. "We give thanks for the amazing history, mission service and community outreach of Lowe Avenue Presbyterian Church," declared Rev. Janet Edwards, Co-Moderator.
Tomorrow afternoon, July 5, is the final worship service at Lowe Avenue Presbyterian Church, Omaha. The River City Mixed Chorus, Omaha's gay and lesbian chorus, will be providing special music. Founded in 1887, Lowe Avenue Presbyterian Church led its community and presbytery in women's ordination, community mission, and as the first welcoming and affirming More Light Church in Nebraska.
Vikki Dearing, Co-Moderator, said today: "Please know that I will be thinking of and praying for you and everyone at Lowe Avenue. I give thanks for the ministry and witness Lowe Avenue has had over the years and I pray that the remaining members will be seeds for inclusion in the congregations you move to." |

Stonewall Riots in NYC
June 28, 1969... June 28, 2009
It began at a bar. The Stonewall Bar in New York City, the West Village. It could have been at church. Finally, they had enough of being told they could not be who they were, love who they fell in love with, even be safe in public.
J.E. Freeman was 24 at the time. Of his experience at the Stonewall Bar riot, he said: "That night the world changed for me and for every other gay, lesbian, bi, cross-dressing and transgender person on the planet. That night we were all reborn in the baptism of that hose's 'holy' water." |

The Presbyterian Equality Project of More Light Presbyterians applauds the introduction on June 25 of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The measure was introduced by House Representatives Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis.
I know something about discrimination in the workplace. In 1992, while teaching at Northern Kentucky University, I was fired from my university teaching position for being "controversial" simply because I started the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance or LGBT Group) and was honest about being gay. This situation was described as one of the worst cases of discrimination in the history of the school, the state and in the country. And, there was no legal recourse for me, a level-playing field of fairness and justice did not apply. This is why a federal law, ENDA, is absolutely necessary. |

Good News! The US Conference of Mayors passed a resolution supporting the Freedom to Marry for same-gender loving couples. They also endorsed federal bills such as Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, the Uniting American Families Act, and the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. |

Atlanta, GA: Nearly 2,000 Presbyterians have come to Atlanta this week for a unique kind of Presbyterian Church gathering called the Big Tent. The theme of the gathering is taken from the Gospel of John 1:14 ..."and the Word became flesh." Rev. Janet Edwards, Co-Moderator, MLP and I are here representing More Light Presbyterians and participating in the gathering.
The Big Tent has been called “a denominational happening” and “a big Presbyterian family reunion.” The event will be celebratory, diverse, participatory and intergenerational. We will worship together and share meals. The partner conferences are planning plenary sessions, panels, Bible studies, workshops, tours and networking opportunities. The exhibit hall will feature displays of the PC(USA) agencies and some of their related organizations. We will close with a Saturday evening celebration at Atlanta's Centennial Park. (www.pcusa.org)

May 26. This morning, the California State Supreme Court announced its deeply disappointing decision to uphold Proposition 8. While More Light Presbyterians is pleased that the court recognized the legal marriages of the 18,000 same-sex couples married in 2008, we are profoundly disappointed by its decision to uphold the anti-LGBT, discriminatory Proposition 8 that was narrowly passed by a ballot initiative.
It is incredulous that the legal, equal and civil rights were not protected by either the Court or the electorate in a state within a country that is committed to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for all of its citizens. |
