Join RainbowCorps New Orleans 2009, November 16 - 19, for 4 days of work, or come for one or two days. Local commuters are welcome!
Four years after hurricane Katrina made landfall, the City of New Orleans continues to struggle with recovery efforts. You can help! We had extraordinary experiences in 2006, 2007 and 2008 serving in New Orleans and with the continued need, we have committed to return to New Orleans this fall.
Live into the Gospel of Christ that calls us to care for our neighbors. Serve with RainbowCorps, a mission service initiative of More Light Presbyterians, to provide relief work through Project Homecoming--a joint initiative between the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Presbytery of South Louisiana. Work days will be Monday, November 16 through Thursday, November 19. |

Bishop John Shelby Spong has long drawn that
line for the Church, our nation and the world. Spong is informed and
inspired by the life, example and teachings of Jesus; thoughtful interpretations
of Scripture; experiences of grace and a Gospel for all people, not just some;
and a moral order for universe.
On October 14, 2009, Bishop John Shelby Spong
drew that line again by declaring "A Manifesto! The Time Has Come!"
This manifesto is shared in full below this introduction and call to share it,
study it, have it inform and inspire your life as a person of faith, a Christian
and a responsible citizen.
I encourage you to share this Manifesto with
everyone in your family, circle of friends, local congregation, and in your
community. I encourage you to share this Manifesto with your pastor, youth
leader, Sunday School teachers, and all of the lay leaders in your church. If
you are in college, share this with your campus minister and all of the other
students. If you are in seminary, share this with all of your professors, the
campus chaplain and with the other students in your seminary
community. |

The National Board of Directors and Staff of More Light Presbyterians give thanks to God for the life, ministry and witness of Virginia Davidson who died peacefully today at her home surrounded by loved ones.
We are so grateful for the pastoral care provided so faithfully by her pastor, Rev. Dr. Pat Youngdahl and Virginia's beloved church family, Downtown United Presbyterian Church, Rochester. Downtown United Presbyterian Church was one of the pioneering congregations to minister and witness as a welcoming and affirming More Light Church, making that decision and affiliation in 1979. Like her beloved Downtown church, Virginia blazed many a trail for peacemaking, justice for women, racial reconciliation and equality for LGBT people and their families. Rev. Youngdahl's message about Virginia's death and memorial service follow this remembrance. |

| Presbyterian Equality Project A Report from the National Equality March, Obama's speech & more! Washington, DC: Today thousands of people marched on Washington for LGBT equality. More Light Presbyterians supported this historic moment of national grassroots organizing by: serving as one of the national pro-LGBT faith organizations to support the March by officially endorsing it; by having a group of More Light Presbyterians march; and through the witness of Rev. Ruth Hamilton, co-pastor, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C., a welcoming and affirming More Light church, and Michael J. Adee, standing with two dozen faith leaders on the stage in front of the Capitol with Rev. Troy Perry as he offered the invocation at the rally.
Today was an extraordinary experience to be part of this national call for justice and equality for LGBT people and our families along with thousands of rainbow-flag waving hope-filled Americans. It was a sacred privilege to represent More Light Presbyterians at the March, the HIV/AIDS Rally and Vigil, and the national interfaith worship service. I carried all of you in my heart today as I marched, sang, and prayed." said Michael J. Adee, Executive Director & Field Organizer. MLP was one of the national sponsors of the National HIV/AIDS Rally and Vigil on Saturday evening at the Ellipse, in front of the Washington Monument. George Kerr, Westminster Presbyterian Church, served on the planning committee. The Open Doors MLP Chapter and Westminster Presbyterian Church were national sponsors of the rally and vigil, too. With the rising HIV infection rates for young gay and bisexual men, and the continued high rates of infection for African-American and Latino persons, all of us were called into compassion and action. On Saturday night, President Barack Obama spoke at the National HRC Dinner. President Obama told LGBT Americans that his commitment to end discrimination in the military, in the workplace and for loving couples and their families is "unwavering."

Coming Out in Middle School: New York Times
article & questions for all of us
How safe and affirming is your family, church,
local school & community for gay youth? How safe and affirming is
your state, our country & the world for gay, LGBT or questioning youth?
What messages and climate are they confronted with as they discover and affirm
who they are as God has made them?
Featured in this article below is the Openarms
Youth Project in Tulsa. Vikki Dearing, Co-Moderator,
More Light Presbyterians, and I visited Openarms while doing MLP field work in
Tulsa. We were absolutely amazed, delighted and grateful for such a safe place
for gay, LGBT/questioning youth. During that visit, we looked at each and said,
"We could not have imagined something like this when we were young." And, I
said to Vikki, "Imagine how different our lives had been if there had been such
places for us?" College Hill Presbyterian Church, Tulsa, a
welcoming & affirming More Light Church, is a strong supporter of
Openarms. |
