 Good News from West Texas! Tres Rios Presbytery approves Amendment 08-B |
|
Saturday, February 21 2009 @ 01:01 AM by Michael Adee
Today, February 20, at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, the Tres Rios Presbytery affirmed the 218th General Assembly's Ordination Amendment 08-B by a vote of 37 YES to 34 NO.
The Ordination Amendment vote in 2001-02 by Tres Rios Presbytery was 17 Yes, 54 No. This is a remarkable 28% positive shift from the previous vote to the one today.
So, Tres Rios Presbytery is another presbytery in this extraordinary trend of presbyteries "flipping" their votes from NO in 2001 to YES in 2009. The first presbytery to "flip" from opposition in 2001 to affirmation in 2009 was the Presbytery of Western North Carolina. The Mission Statement of Tres Rios Presbytery reveals why a vote to end discrimination against LGBT Presbyterians and their families is possible within this presbytery:
The Goals and Objectives of Tres Rios Presbytery
"Where there is no leadership the people fail" Proverbs 11:14
The Presbytery of Tres Rios is called to be: faithful to the great commission of Christ; a partner in providing resources, encouragement and care to develop and support faithful congregations; and a catalyst for developing new churches and multi-cultural ministries.
Special thanks to all those working to end discrimination against LGBT Presbyterians and their families now in Tres Rios Presbytery. You are an inspiration.
We want to offer particular gratitude to Rev. Debra Peevey, Associate for Outreach, MLP, and Rev. Tricia Dykers-Koenig, CN, for providing outreach and serving as resource persons with this presbytery.
We want to alert all of you working in local presbyteries to pass 08-B to prepared for any of the "No Action" efforts in your presbytery and be ready to address them.
Thanks be to God for this stand for justice and call to the end to discrimination in Tres Rios Presbytery! Together We are building a Church for all God's people.
with hope and grace,
Michael

2/20/09 Note from Bruce Hahne:
With a record-setting 28% pro-equality shift compared to its previous 2001-2002 vote, it appears that Tres Rios has flipped pro-equality. At this point all I can say is that all bets and guesses about the end of the 08-B voting process are off, because simply on the basis of the 2001-2 vote count, you would never have convinced me in advance that the pro-equality vote would win the day here.

Tres Rios vote stats: 2001-2 01-A: 17 yes, 54 no --> 24% YES 2009 08-B: 37 yes, 34 no --> 52% YES
This is really a stunner, and in a good way. Whatever you guys are doing in Alabama and now in Texas, keep doing it, and feel free to type up a "top tips for shifting the vote pro-equality" sheet and email it in.
