Breaking News!! Marriage Equality Victory in the State of California |
|
Thursday, May 15 2008 @ 07:23 PM
This morning, the decision of the California State Supreme Court striking down the ban on same-sex civil marriage was announced. This is a huge victory for marriage equality. This is the simple recognition of same-gender loving couples and that our relationships and families deserve equal treatment under the law and in civil society.
More Light Presbyterians is deeply grateful for all of the Presbyterians who have been working for marriage equality in the State of California. Among those Presbyterian activists are our very own Mitzi Henderson and Bruce Hahne, both of whom have served on the National MLP Board of Directors. A note from Bruce is at the end of this announcement. More Light Presbyterians' three primary commitments for LGBT persons and their families are spiritual equality, ordination equality and marriage equality. When the 218th General Assembly meets in San Jose next month, we will be meeting in a state that supports marriage equality and same-sex civil marriage. We give thanks for the opportunity for our General Assembly to adopt the Baltimore Overture on marriage equality.
Briefs and links to stories from the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times follow this joyful announcement.
This is a day in LGBT equality history and in the life of a democracy to remember!
with hope and gratitude,
Michael

This note from Bruce Hahne, First Presbyterian Church, Palo Alto, CA:
FYI, forwarding. In the few minutes since I sent this out to a few other email lists, EQCA has since confirmed in an email blast to supporters that this is a full win.
This court decision, and the upcoming anti-marriage ballot initiative effort which would ban marriage equality in California (it will likely be on the November 2008 ballot), will now be the context in which the equal marriage overtures coming to San Jose GA will be discussed. Marriage for same-gender couples will be a reality in California at the very time that GA is taking place in San Jose.
