 Chicago Presbytery passes a delete-B overture |
|
Friday, December 16 2005 @ 07:03 PM
Rev. David Murad with
Lake View Presbyterian in Chicago recently let us know the good news that
Chicago Presbytery voted on Dec. 13 to send a delete-B/delete-AI overture to the 2006 General Assembly by a vote of 147-50. The group that organized to bring the overture was well prepared, having organized for almost
a year in advance.
Our field organizer Michael Adee offers some additional thanks and commentary on the Chicago delete-B:
Much gratitude to David Murad and the local group working in the Chicago
Presbytery to remove barriers to the full welcome, affirmation and ministry of
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons and our families and allowing
the Gospel to be available to all God's children. Many faithful clergy and
lay leaders worked with David in this local group including Eunice and Dick
Poethig, the distinguished clergy couple who have served God and our Church
overseas and on the national, regional and local level.
Special thanks to Michael Youngblood of Northminster Presbyterian Church,
Evanston, IL and Michael Kirby of Good Shepherd Presbyerian Church, Chicago, a
More Light Presbyterian affiliated church just this year, for presenting the
ordination overture.
Chicago Presbytery has a long history of "more light" with the following
five congregations affiliated as More Light Presbyterian Churches:
1.
First United Church of Oak Park, Oak Park, IL
2.
Good Shepherd Presbyerian Church, Chicago, IL
3.
Lake View Presbyterian Church, Chicago, IL
4.
Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church, Chicago, IL
5.
St. James United Presbyterian Church, Chicago, IL
This particular vote of nearly 75% in favor makes the Chicago Presbytery the 16th
presbytery so far to support change and the removal of prejudice,
discrimination and the barriers to the full welcome and affirmation of lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender persons in the life, ministry and witness of the
Presbyterian Church (USA).
Together, we are building a Church for All God's people!
with hope and gratitude,
Michael
12/17/05, David Murad adds some additional thanks:
Many other pastors played much stronger roles than I in the entire
process, including Nanette Sawyer (Wicker Park Grace), Michael Kirby (Good Shepherd), Mike Youngblood (Northminster, Evanston); Jeff Doane (Lincoln Park) and Joy Douglas Strome (Lake View). I simply took notes
and sent out lots of email reminders! |
