The ideal Associate Pastor will demonstrate:

    # A caring, relational attitude in working within a diverse faith community in close coordination with a team of ministerial colleagues and lay leaders

    # Strong affirmation and commitment to service in Christ’s Church as expressed by the Presbyterian Church, USA, and the mission, vision and values of Immanuel

    # Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to listen, discern, and pray with persons of different backgrounds or points of view

    # Strong background and familiarity with Hispanic cultures throughout Latin America and the United States

    # Experience in worship leadership and pastoral care with multicultural and/or multilingual faith communities

Gifts, Skills and Experiences the congregation possesses to fulfill its mission:

Extraordinary diversity marks today’s Immanuel congregation, a microcosm of urban Los Angeles. Immanuel’s members hail from the United States and many other nations. With this remarkable diversity come challenges, but we welcome challenges. Sunday morning worship is conducted in Spanish and in English, with an intentional time for all members to be together during a half-hour bilingual section. Music during worship draws from many international traditions, with congregational singing in Spanish, English and other languages. Our mission has taken us beyond our walls, into neighborhood pilgrimages, demonstrations and mission trips.

Immanuel members are young for a Presbyterian congregation, with an average age in the early 40s. Because of this youth, the congregation is energetic and enthusiastic in its commitment to mission, and at times hard-pressed for time and resources to fulfill this commitment. Members include professionals, skilled and unskilled workers, students and retirees.

Providing leadership to this diverse community of faith is a highly capable, bilingual staff of both ordained and non-ordained ministry professionals, each with extensive duties and responsibilities. The staff, elders, deacons, and other leaders demonstrate unflagging commitment to the cause of Christ by encouraging the church community to live out its vision with joy and grace.

Key theological issues of the church and society that are reflected in the ministry of the congregation/organization:

Within the past two years, Immanuel has undertaken two controversial initiatives which have had considerable impact on our congregation’s ministry.

In 2007, Immanuel joined the New Sanctuary Movement, a grassroots interfaith group of congregations committed to justice for undocumented immigrants. Immanuel currently houses within its walls an active deacon who is subject to a federal order of deportation. Immanuel’s leadership and members regularly participate in advocacy activities directed to the upholding the civil rights of the undocumented, embracing radical hospitality, including the biblical call to welcome “the widow, the orphan, and the foreigner” in our midst.

In 2008, Immanuel became a “More Light” church, making public its historic welcome of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals (GLBT) into full participation in its life, ministry and witness. More Light Presbyterians seeks to ensure justice for GLBT persons, both within and outside the church. GLBT persons occupy key posts in Immanuel’s leadership, reflecting the diversity of God’s creation and the gracious welcome of all into Christ’s Church.
