Co-Pastor - St Mark's Presbyterian Church (Tucson, AZ)

St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ seeks a Co-Pastor (to join the Co-Pastor already on staff.)

A. Major Responsibilities:

Mutual (Workload responsibilities will be regularly evaluated and negotiated by Co-pastors and the Session)

# Share decision-making equally with current Co-Pastor
# Rotate head-of-staff role
# Collaborate with co-pastor colleague in oversight and support of committees and activities
# Preach twice monthly in a way that is thought-provoking, challenging and Biblically-based
# Lead and empower in the active pursuit of social justice at local and global levels
# Provide creative worship leadership for traditional,contemporary and youth services
# Assist with worship leadership when not preaching
# Nurture the spiritual vitality of the congregation
# Alternate moderating Session meetings
# Provide pastoral care for the congregation
# Oversee membership/evangelism and hospitality activities
# Strengthen networks of communication within congregation and throughout community
# Participate in work of larger church, including service at Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly, and interfaith organizations

Specific

# Oversee and provide spiritual leadership for Children, Youth, Young Adult and Family Ministries
# Develop children and youth programming that is theologically challenging; plan annual confirmation classes
# Facilitate and empower youth participation and leadership around social justice issues; participate in youth mission and outreach events
# Oversee organization and expansion of small-group ministries
# Act as liaison to St. Mark’s Preschool

B. Characteristics and qualifications needed

We seek a co-pastor who works from an inclusive vision of the Gospel to provide engaging preaching, leadership, and programming for youth, families, children, and the congregation generally. Inspirational vision and collaborative leadership are vital qualifications, as are experience with youth, interpersonal skills, and a strong record as a preacher and leader.

To sustain our programs for youth, children, and families, our co-pastor will need to have an engaging manner, organizational and communication skills, and a guiding commitment to social justice. Experience with intergenerational activities is desired to strengthen relationships among members of all ages. Also useful are creative ideas for involving youth more actively in worship.

Inspirational vision is also essential in our co-pastor’s preaching, which should be guided by a passion for connecting our Christian faith and Presbyterian tradition with social justice concerns, including the full participation of LGBT persons. Our co-pastor’s engagement in teaching and preaching will be guided by a compassionate commitment to deepen and expand our community by nurturing our congregation and evangelizing our love-and-justice mission in the wider community.

Our co-pastor’s collaborative leadership skills should extend to organizational development, including basic administration, staff supervision, and budget and stewardship matters. In all efforts, our co-pastor must be committed to collegial decision-making.
